These are techniques that aim at the opening of the airways, when they are blocked by tumors (malignant or benign), scar tissue (post-intubation syndrome) or even foreign body aspiration. Hot techniques also have hemostatic role. Their application is done by special catheters through the bronchoscope.
HOT TECHNIQUES
Hot techniques include laser, argon plasma and diathermy. They are about "electric powers" that burn tumors and cause hemostasis at the same time. The results of the three techniques are impressive; however argon plasma and diathermy techniques are safer and cheaper.
DIATHERMY
COLD TECHNIQUES
The main application of cryotherapy is central airway opening and tumor debulking. It is also used for taking the tissue specimen.
